Roberts Chapel
Hi, my name is Raydeana and I'm fundraising for Roberts Chapel.
In the late 1800's, Patrick Henry Roberts donated a parcel of land on which to build a one room school house. As was the custom of the times, the Roberts School was also used as a church and a community meeting place. In 1925 some community members joined together to organize a community homecoming at the school. Since then, families and friends have met annually to discuss old times and worship together.
Around 1940, the Roberts School became a casualty of progress and its doors were closed to the children. An attempt to sell the building and land by the school board met with failure when heirs of Patrick Henry Roberts proved that through original agreement, the property had never been deeded to the school board and thus belonged to the heirs. Trustees were appointed and the school building was remodeled with the addition of a pulpit, benches, and other items donated by the churches in the community.
Without fail, for the past 98 years, relatives and community members congregate at this Chapel and celebrate Roberts' Homecoming.
The upkeep of this building falls to family and community members. The last major maintenance was a roof several years ago. However, the building is now in dire need of new siding. It is the desire of those who attended the last meetings, to replace the siding with beveled wood to maintain the integrity of the times the building was built. The cost of the materials is estimated at $4800.
I am requesting donations to go towards this project. Thank you for anything you can do to help with this endeavor.
