Robert's Birthday: Samburu and Turkana Emergency Food Drive
Naledi Initiative & Amwe Movement Collaboration
Togetherness ("amwe"-Kii Tharaka) is humankind's most powerful force.
Watch: Current News Clip Covering the Situation
This is a story about collaboration, hunger and togetherness.
We believe there are no "poor" people. There are, however, resilient, resourceful, vibrant, loving people (as pictured below) who are currently stuck in poor & helpless systems resulting in emergency need. When supported to get out of these systems, these wise communities naturally thrive. This is where we, the global community, come in. This is an opportunity to use currency as a statement of our truest values and to fund the world we want to see created. In this case scenario, $5 could save a life.
The Situation
A sustained drought in Turkana, Samburu and Tharaka communities in rural Northern & Eastern Kenya has resulted in a major famine. As of Oct 31st, Officials have deemed the food scarcity in this region a regional emergency. Many families have not eaten in over 8 days. Currently, villages we collaborate with are trying to survive by rationing their only supply of wild harvested nuts between the community. Many are beginning to lack the power to speak & walk out of malnutrition. Join us in a birthday celebration giving to where it matters most.
100% of the proceeds will go towards meeting the emergency hunger needs of these families.
$5 can save a life (feed a hungry belly for a week)
$20 can feed a family of four for a week (+)!
No donation is too small.
How the Drive Works
We are raising funds for our second food drive distribution tour in January 2023! Proceeds will be used to buy food, clothing and medication. The Naledi Kenya team will then embark on their second journey to distribute directly to the rural communities in emergency need via our donated truck. Check out the photo journal from our first food drive in August below!
Robert's Birthday is coming up on December 28th (he has never celebrated his birthday before!) He wants to begin celebrating this year by raising funds to support this cause dear to his heart and his people.
Proceeds will go toward distributing the following emergency needs identified by the Samburu/Turkana/Tharaka People.
1. Food-Rice, Maize flour, Maize, Beans, Cooking oil
2. Clothes
3. Medications for Common Diseases
(Eye infections, Common cold, Deworming drugs, Skin diseases)
A Note from Robert (Born/Raised in the Tharaka Community)
"The situation in Northern Kenya is extremely dire and has moved from a state of crisis to an emergency situation. On our August food drive, I visited with my friends in the Turkana and Samburu villages. I sat with children who had not eaten food for up to 5-8 days, some on 3 meals a week. The lack of water is the biggest challenge. No water =No livestock=No nourishment. For this pastoralist community, losing their livestock truly means losing their livelihood. They are just surviving. In the village, women give birth at home. They have no medication for any type of disease, so when they get sick, they have to wait for a miracle; there is no hospital, clinic, or chemist nearby. Access to essential services like health is so limited that minor ailments continue to cause morbidity and mortality. It's a national tragedy."
Who are we?
This project is a collaboration between a local Kenyan non-profit, Naledi (run by Robert Murithi Birthday Boy), and a California-based project, Amwe Movement. We are uniting to gather the resources and wisdom of our local communities to fund cross-cultural peace initiatives (like this one). We can do the most powerful work together. Folks in Tharaka call this "Amwe" (togetherness). The story and photographs below capture our August 2022 journey to provide food/clothing to Samburu and Turkana communities in Northern Kenya.
