Final Update!! 9/15 from Gabriella!
My sister has been waiting all her life for this and God made it happen for her So I can finally announcement that we have a new addition to the Kalam Id-Din Family Ammara Halimah Kalam Id-Din!!
A note from Gabriella, Shahidah’s sister:
I am writing to get assistance supporting my sister Shahidah Kalam Id-Din in her journey to adoption. As many of you know, Shahidah was in the process of adopting Ayinde when her aunt returned to claim custody of her. Two of Ayinde’s siblings were already in the aunt’s care, so Shahidah did not want to fight it--she felt like Ayinde should be with her siblings.
Shahidah is loved by many and I would love to see the reality of her becoming a parent happen for her. I am asking anyone who can to help support her in her journey!!! Please feel free to share this campaign with anyone you think may be interested in contributing, and please consider sharing with your social media networks.
Here is some information about the process:
The main hurdle to independent and permanent adoption is cost: across private agencies, fees exceed $35,000 (Source: Adoptions from the Heart) In an effort to raise these funds, Shahidah has been saving and also tutoring on weekends (in addition to teaching full-time). As her friends and family understand, Shahidah was born to parent--and there are so many children who would thrive in her care right now.
Please consider donating to help Shahidah raise the $23,000 placement fee for adopting a child. Shahidah has researched over twenty independent agencies, and has landed with Lifelong Adoptions, an agency that rose up for its support of non-traditional families. With the placement fee paid, Shahidah will be eligible as an adoptive parent--and the agency has said that she is well-positioned for swift placement. Our fundraising goal date is May 28th (Shahidah's birthday); reaching this goal date would enable Shahidah to spend the summer moving forward in the adoption process.
Shahidah has been learning and processing the entire journey, from her foster experience with Ayinde (who is thriving, and who gets excited each time she sees Shahidah, of course!), to her revelatory experiences with different agencies. In particular, Shahidah has been reflecting on how privilege impacts the ability to provide a child with a home. She is writing it all down, so stay tuned for--and become a part of--the full story!
Thank you for supporting our beloved Shahidah, who has poured so much love into the world.
