Mo's 1,036 mile juggernaut
Donation protected
Hello Friends!
This fundraiser is pretty straightforward. It is a virtual bike ride from Mexico to New Mexico, to follow my Grandfather’s journey and to help the campesinos and asylum seekers that follow in his path.
One year in, the pandemic has exacerbated the inequities of our society. Most of the food on our tables was picked by day laborers without proper protection against Covid19. While most of us have the ability to work from home and order groceries online, the campesinos are still out in the fields.
My Grandfather, José Encarnación, was an illiterate campesino who laid rails for the Santa Fe Railroad, yet the accomplishments of his 10 children and 78 grandchildren are the fulfillment of an immigrant’s American Dream. My goal is to virtually ride the 1,036 miles of his journey in order to honor my Grandfather, Grandmother (María Luz), Aunts (Ramona, Benita), Uncles (Cleofas, Jesús, Antonio, Gilberto, Juan, José, Miguel) and my Dad, Maximiliano.
I’ve chosen to raise money for groups that serve campesinos, immigrants and asylum seekers in the Bay Area. Hijas del Campo, which translates to Daughters of the Field, is a Contra Costa County grassroots organization. Its aim is to help migrant and seasonal farm workers improve their quality of life, including health, safety and working conditions. They are currently organizing Covid testing and vaccine administration as well as delivering food and essential supplies.
CALMA is also a grassroots community made up entirely of volunteers, based in the Bay Area, that provides support to families and individuals marginalized due to their immigration status both locally and at the US / Mexico border. The pillars of their organization are Education, Community Engagement, and Fundraising. At CALMA their mission is to aid asylum seekers, day laborers, and migrants in the Bay Area and to work in partnership to support the efforts of border-based aid organizations. Their community engagement program allows them to be of service to families who are navigating the complexities and injustices of the immigration system.
Both Hijas del Campo and CALMA (Collective Action for Laborers, Migrants and Asylum Seekers) can be followed on Instagram (@hijasdelcampo, @calmaofficial_org). For more information about CALMA, check out linktr.ee/CALMAOFFICIAL. For Hijas del Campo, linktr.ee/hijasdelcampo.
I hope you will check out these organizations and donate in whatever way you can. 100% of funds raised will be split evenly between both charities. I'll share stories on Instagram @juggernaut1036. Please join me on this journey!
