Riding 1 meter for each life lost to covid19
Support to Front Line Covid 19 Workers.
2020 GVH Covid-19 Challenge - by Omar Boulama
As many of my Genesse Valley Harriers Running Club (GVH) teammates have set a Covid Running Challenge goal for early July, I am taking mine out of running!
My Challenge: -I will ride a bike, One meter for each life lost to Covid 19 since the start of the pandemic until the challenge day. Approximately 400 miles. I will start my bike ride from Strong Memorial Hospital on or about July 2rd and try to arrive to my destination, NY City’s Columbia University Medical Center on July 4th. Sadly by July 4rd the world will have lost about 500 000 lives to Covid-19. Over, 120,000. in the USA.
My Purpose:
1st - -To THANK frontline workers, nurses and doctors, the heroes of this war against Covid-19 and provide them with some support via recognition and face masks at both URMC and CUMC.
2nd. - To send a message to individuals, families and communities who have lost loved ones that we care and support them and support those who helped them.
. 3rd - Show others what NY TOUGH is about. - biking is not my forte - I am a runner, so I will be “Pushing my limits” Inspired by GVH Gary Radford last year by riding solo for 6,000 miles (Florida to Arctic Circle, Alaska)
The GOAL:
Raising as much money as we can to buy/provide protective equipment to the frontline workers in Rochester and NYC and deliver them at the time of the ride. (the packages will be delivered via a car that will follow the ride). My goal is to raise 1c per each meter that I will ride over 500,000 meters = $5000 Hopefully more.
Why NYC and why Columbia University Medical Center and University of Rochester Medical Center?
1. NYC is the hardest hit city in the US by Covid-19 and needs recognition and help for their efforts. Rochester, NY is where I live.
2. At one meter per life lost that would make the challenge about 500 km, about the distance from Rochester to NYC. That would be crossing NYS from the top to the bottom. If you calculated a grave is about 1 meter wide and put each grave next to the other unfortunately graves will cover from here to NYC .
3. Columbia University Medical Center and the University of Rochester Medical Center are the epicenters of Covid-19 care in their respective cities and we have GVH teammates and/or former teammates as front line workers in these locations. Dr. Wakenda Tyler, Chief, Orthopedic Oncology Service at Columbia University Medical Center, Dr. Kiki Novik and others serve at URMC as did Dr. Tyler several years ago.
Why biking not running?
As a runner and a running club, running is what we always do. Running would be a cool adventure more than a challenge for me , Biking will be a big challenge for me as I barely bike 5-10 times a year !
Why July-4th arrival?
It’s independence day weekend , a time of recognizing FREEDOM, the GREATNESS of this country and that we support one another. !
What can you do to help us and the frontline Heroes?
- Sponsor 1000 meters, 10000 meters or 50,000 miles and donate 1c per meter.
- Donate at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/riding-1-meter-to-every-life-lost-to-covid19?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cf+share-flow-1
- Share this with you friends ,family and community so we can meet the goal .
- Follow the challenge to cheer me up , encourage me and to be part of the cause ( I can do the challenge with the support of my running club as they always did and still do, but we can’t meet the fundraiser alone ! WE WILL NEED EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!
