As a white man growing up in a predominantly white community, my voice in the fight for racial equity and social justice has been largely nonexistent. The favor given to me by my skin color has left me perpetually oblivious to the cruel realities of our unjust systems and biased institutions. And while I would never categorize myself as a racist, I also never did anything to be actively anti-racist.
Now is the time for change.
I recently began educating myself through films, articles, podcasts and conversations on the history of racism in America and one thing is for sure - there remains an endless need for change and it must start with each of us, no matter the color of our skin.
For this reason I am embarking on a bike ride to promote racial equity and social justice. My intention is to serve as a thought provoker, a conversation starter, and a reason to initiate (if you haven’t already) your own internal dialogue about race. I hope my effort will inspire you to begin having these discussions with family, friends, relatives and neighbors and ultimately lead to truly combative efforts against racism.
My Ride 4 Change will stretch more than 500 miles of the Pacific Coast, embarking from Grant Pass, Oregon on July 27 and arriving in Santa Cruz, California on August 8. In preparation for the journey, I will share with you many of the resources I have discovered over the past year to provide additional fuel for discourse. Follow me on Instagram for these posts: @danielpaul_66
In addition to raising thought, I am also raising funds to support the cause. Live Free (http://www.livefreeusa.org/) is a faith-based organization aiming to end gun violence and mass incarceration through investment in programs and initiatives that build better access to jobs, entrepreneurship, and the alleviation of poverty and discrimination.
If you would like to contribute to this mission, please feel free to donate here and help us reach our goal of $5,000. No amount is too small, and thanks to a matching program by my sister’s employer, your donation goes even further.
Thank you.
