Richard's 70th Birthday

Donation protected
Richard is turning 70 on May 11, 2021. While we aren’t able to throw a big party with all of you this year, we are able to send Richard and Kris to New Orleans for a few days to visit family and friends. This GoFundMe will help to pay for their flights, rental car and meals while they’re away. Thank you.

Join the Facebook Event and share your Richard stories!

Richard George Pate was born in 3317 BC to Edna and Enoch in a small town in the Ancient Near East. Richard begat Lamech and Rakel who begat Noah and Emzara….

Just kidding…. As you know, as the oldest, most accomplished, most beautiful, smartest and favorite of the Pate children  , it is my job to razz Richard on his birthday (see previous May 11 Facebook posts) ...and he makes it SO easy! You’ve met him. You know what I mean; but it’s his birthday, so let’s recap:

Richard George Pate was born on May 11, 1951 to Louise and Johnny Pate in LaPorte, Indiana. It was all downhill from there.

Wait… one more time… with feeling!   5,6,7,8...

Richard George Pate was born on May 11, 1951 to Louise and Johnny Pate in LaPorte, Indiana. He grew up on McClung Road and graduated from LaPorte High School. On October 30, 1969, Richard joined the United States Navy and served as 313-Cooks/Chef aboard the USS COLUMBUS (CG-12) until his honorable separation on August 20, 1973.

After the Navy, Richard returned home to LaPorte and met Kristie Lee Pate in a mental asylum. Yup, you read that right.

Kris was a candy striper and Richard was on orderly… or so they say.   They married on October 12, 1975.

Then, the best thing that has ever happened to Richard or Kris… or the world, quite frankly…. Kesha Marie Pate was born on March 2, 1982.   HUZZAAHH!!! (Side note: Richard wanted to name me Antici  . The Dad jokes just got worse from there.)

Really we could stop here. I mean… What else is there? Life accomplished.

Okay fine… Richard John Pate was born on December 31, 1985 and Kaitlyn Grace Pate was born on January 29, 1989. Blah, blah, blah.

Oh, and then Konnor Timothy O’Neal Pate, Richard’s first grandchild, was born on March 14, 2009. He’s super cute, right?

During all of this regular life stuff, Richard received a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology from Purdue University, an MS in Human Resources Management & Development from National Lewis University and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame.

For most of his adult life, Richard worked for NiSource/NIPSCO and did things with meters, electricity, gas, etc. I’d go into more detail, but BOOOORING! Anyway, you can ask him about it sometime, but I warn you, pack a lunch. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. He also worked for the railroad, Indiana & Michigan Power Company, Sensus AMI systems and started his own consulting business, Pate & Associates.

Then he retired. The end. ...ish.

It’s easy to reduce 7 decades to a few dates and events, but we all know there’s so much more to a life.

Richard is a son, brother, father, grandfather and friend. He’s grouchy, stubborn and a pain in the ass. He makes people laugh and makes friends wherever he goes. He raised his family by working hard every day to give them not only what they needed, but damn near everything they wanted. ...I’m still waiting for my pony. IJS. Richard showed up to all of our games and attended all of the awards ceremonies, recitals and plays. And when I say all, I mean all. He drove me literally across the country to play basketball in an M&M green Pontiac LeMans. He fixed our bikes, fixed the pipes, fixed the washing machine and fixed about ⅓ of all the things RJ broke (believe me, that is A LOT of things!). He kept us safe, kept us clothed and fed, paid for all the things and did what Dads are supposed to do. Good job, Richard.

I know you have Richard stories too, so please share them with us in honor of his 70 years on this planet.

We can’t throw a big party this year, because COVID sucks, but we are able to send Richard and Kris to New Orleans to visit family and friends. We know times have been hard for many of us, but if you would like to make a gift to help support this milestone birthday trip, you can Venmo @KrisPate or make a gift via GoFundMe at https://www.gofundme.com/f/richardpate.

But most importantly, please send Richard a happy birthday message on May 11.   That will be the best gift of all.

Cheers!
Kesha - Once again, the oldest, most accomplished, most beautiful, smartest and favorite of the Pate children.
