After an unimaginable ordeal, Richard Duarte Rodriguez is finally home. At just 24 years old, Richard has endured what no one should ever experience: months of detention and deportation, locked away in one of the world’s most notorious mega-prisons, CECOT, in El Salvador.

Richard left Venezuela in search of safety and a better life. Like so many others, he dreamed of working hard, supporting his family, and giving his children a future without hunger or violence. He came to the United States legally, was working hard, and did everything right. Richard followed the rules and embraced a new life with childlike wonder, hope, and gratitude.

Then, everything changed. Without warning, Richard was deported to El Salvador and sent to CECOT—a facility built for gang leaders, not innocent migrants. For months, his family lived in fear, not knowing if he was safe or even alive.

Inside those walls, Richard and the other men refused to give up. They didn’t make it easy for the guards—they gave them hell every single day. They held on to their dignity, their humanity, and their hope against impossible odds.

Now, after tireless advocacy and an international push for justice, Richard has been released and is finally home in Venezuela.
