Please Support NYC Action Lab!

My name is Carlene Pinto. I am a lifelong organizer in NYC and founder of NYC Action Lab Inc.

For more than a decade, I have worked to provide justice to families who have lost children to law enforcement, formerly incarcerated individuals, and undocumented immigrants. In the last two years, I have focused NYC Action Lab's efforts on supporting countless efforts led by Black Lives Matter, Movement for Black Lives (M4BL), and others mobilizing to dismantle systemic oppression in NYC.

The murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor aren’t the only reasons NYC has been protesting for over a month. Implicit bias and racism lives in every corner of our city and it manifests through institutionalized policies like cash bail, stop and frisk, and broken windows policing. From Sean Bell to Ramarley Graham, NYC’s Black families are terrorized by the constant threat of brutality and violence escalated everyday by the NYPD. The NYPD is the 7th largest army in the world and it is not accountable to the 8 million New Yorkers it is meant to serve — a fact we find disturbing and wrong.

NYC has maintained 33 days of consistent protest because New Yorkers are tired of injustice, inequality, and inequity.

COVID-19 highlighted the exploitation of front line workers and communities of color in this city. The novel coronavirus has shown that certain communities aren’t just overpoliced, but that they also do not receive the same access to housing, job security, healthcare, and other basic human rights others get. These inequalities have put NYC on the brink of a housing crisis, with nearly 50,000 evictions expected in the coming month. This is unacceptable and inhumane. People should not have to worry about how they are going to maintain a steady income, feed their children, or continue to pay their rent during a deadly pandemic the likes of which we have never seen in this century.

To inspire change within our communities, within our city, and within our country, NYC Action Lab is determined to turn this powerful moment into a movement to educate, organize, and mobilize New Yorkers for Black lives toward the polls in November’s presidential election and in NYC’s citywide elections in 2021. We believe in building the New York people of color deserve, where every New Yorker has access to healthcare, housing, and education that's just and equitable

At the start of the George Floyd uprisings, the NYC Action Lab team fundraised $15,000 in online donations through Venmo and received $30,000 worth of donated supplies to provide PPE, water, food, and transportation support to organizers and protestors across NYC.

Below is a breakdown of these contributions and how they helped us in our goal to support protesters and civic engagement across New York City in the last 33 days on the ground.

$4,500: Sound Equipment, Staging & Security
$4,000: Training Supplies, Walkies, & Megaphones
$1,000: Tarps & Support items for Occupy City Hall (6) Day Occupation @ City Hall.
$2,500: Food, Water & PPE Supplies
$1,500: Transportation: Gas, Metrocards, & Car Service/Taxi's
$1,000: Emergency support stipends to Organizers on the front line
Estimated Total Spent: $13,500
Estimated Total Available: $1,500

From these donations 100+ mobilizations and demonstrations received supplies (snacks, masks, sunscreen, bug spray, hand sanitizer, water) and NYC Action Lab support. Not only that, but NYC Action Lab hosted 2 training sessions with these donations and we are now preparing for bi-weekly rallies, actions, and training events to continue the momentum around this movement against systemic racism and oppression.

Communities that are under police occupation amidst a pandemic deserve on-the-ground organizing support from experienced movement organizers. With NYC Action Lab, we have created a collective and safe haven that welcomes leaders and allies that centers, amplifies, and provides resources to sustain this movement to #defundthepolice and reinvest across our communities.

We need you to help us continue to build power, educate and train the masses to vote, and win campaigns for justice and equity.

Please support our efforts to continue to support young organizers across NYC through weekly workshops and non-violent direct actions spearheaded by leaders across advocacy issues.  Help strengthen our cause as we continue to educate, organize, and mobilize through our training workshops, actions, and community education series.
