Winter Care Packages for the Homeless

As winter is approaching and with the temperatures dropping, individuals experiencing homelessness are especially vulnerable. Those on the streets often spend their nights without blankets, or other necessities such as gloves, hats, and socks. Though many organizations collect these items for this population, there is a need for in-person distribution. As a result, this independent community effort will serve to meet this need in Philadelphia.
The goal of this project is to equip those individuals without shelter with necessities to keep warm. Each package will contain a backpack, a blanket, a pair of winter socks, gloves, and a beanie.  In addition to these items, each care package will also contain a flyer for different resources and information regarding where to go in case of a “code blue” emergency.
There are four main steps for this project, including fundraising, purchasing items, assembly of care packages, and distribution. Through the help of student volunteers, we can personally deliver these necessities to the homeless community.
These items would be purchased on a wholesale website. Using an estimate of $1200 of donations, 60 care packages could be created.  With an ultimate goal of $2500, we could create approximately 120 care packages.
