Return Aboriginal Artefacts from California to Australia

Donation protected
These are not souvenirs, replicas, or artist impressions, they are genuine artefacts of significant cultural importance.

In late 2025, Judy, a resident of California, travelled to Australia on what was a once-in-a-lifetime trip. During her visit, she shared a remarkable story about eight items in her possession that she believed may have originated in Australia.

Independent Guidance and Research

To better understand the origin and significance of these artefacts, we sought input from established institutions and experts. We have been in contact with:

  • Queensland Museum
  • Western Australian Museum
  • Perth Aboriginal Art Gallery

Through these conversations and our own research, we have been guided toward the conclusion that these items are most likely Aboriginal tools from the Pilbara region, dating to the late 19th century.

We continue to approach this process with care and respect, and our goal is to ensure the artefacts are returned in a culturally appropriate and meaningful way.

The Story of their Origin

Judy believes these items came into her family’s care during the Great Depression, likely traded in lieu of cash. Recognising their potential significance, she preserved them for many years until we were finally able to better understand their origin.

Now, we are working together to return these artefacts to where they belong.

We have connected with Shaun Park, an artist from the Pilbara region, whose artistic style closely aligns with the craftsmanship of the artefacts. Based on his cultural knowledge, he believes they may have been created by his people. Judy’s wish is for these items to be returned to Shaun and his community so they can be respected, preserved, and appreciated by future generations, rather than remaining unseen in private storage.
