Restoration of the Seven Star Cavern Wishing Well
in Chinatown, Los Angeles....
Like many of us, since I was a kid, I have been tossing coins in this wishing well with dreams of striking it rich, to finding true love. The wishing well, built in 1938 by Professor Henry Liu Hong Kay, has been restored (and sadly vandalized) numerous times over the years. Jody Hummer, who amazingly watched over the Wishing Well for years, has sadly recently passed.
The site could use a new paint job and a sign telling its history. I have received permission from the Los Angeles Chinatown Corporation to restore the paint, statues and signs of the wishing well the last week of this coming December.
With a small group of artists and historians, we plan to repaint the rock formation, river, replace missing statues, signs and more.
Whatever we raise over our goal, shall go towards supplies for repainting again in two years (2028) and donating the rest to the nearby Chinese Historical Society of Southern California.
No one on the restoration crew will be getting paid for this restoration. All donations will go towards the paint and supplies needed.
About myself, I have a strong passion for the preservation of California folk-art environments and historical structures. Helping maintain the memories of the past for future generations is very important to me. Please consider a small donation to this worthy cause of preserving this wonderful Chinese American site.
Sincerely, ~Kai Wada Roath
