My friend's parents, Jane and David Graves, have lost their home to catastrophic water damage caused by a severe storm and now they are facing this heartbreak without support from their insurance company.

During the storms that swept through Rock county recently, an overwhelming amount of water entered their home. The basement filled completely, with water rising all the way to the top step. From there, it spread onto the main level, leaving about six inches of standing water throughout the house. The damage was so extensive that nearly everything left inside is annihilated.

They were only able to save a small amount of clothing and a few sentimental items. Everything else, including furniture, appliances, flooring, drywall, personal belongings, and even both vehicles, have been lost.

To make matters worse, their insurance company has denied their claim, stating this is “flood damage.” We are working hard to gather evidence that this was storm-created water damage, caused by issues directly related to the storm itself, in hopes of getting the decision reversed. But that process will take time time.

Right now, they are displaced, overwhelmed, and grieving the loss of the home they built their life in.

And in less than a week, David is scheduled to have back surgery. He will need to focus on recovery, and instead, they are facing uncertainty about how they will begin to rebuild their home.

They are not people who ask for help. If you know them at all, you know they would give their shirt off their back for anyone in need. This has been incredibly hard for them. But the reality is that they have lost almost everything, and they need support to get through this moment.

Temporary housing during recovery and displacement

Replacement of basic necessities and clothing

Transportation after losing both cars

Cleanup, disposal, and restoration costs

Immediate living expenses while fighting the insurance decision
