For over 60 years, the Monday after Thanksgiving marked the traditional opening day of rifle deer season in Pennsylvania. This cherished tradition brought together families, friends, and entire communities, creating a unique blend of excitement, preparation and fellowship. The long weekend allowed hunters to travel, make final preparations, and participate in local events, while rural businesses, and non-profits benefited from the economic boost of one of the busiest retail weekends of their year.

In 2019, the Pennsylvania Game Commission changed the opening day from Monday, earlier to the Saturday after Thanksgiving, a decision made without the support of hunters, PGC agency staff science, or prior PGC hunter surveys. The shift disrupted family time, reduced time for travel, hunting preparation, and diminished the economic and social benefits that the Monday opener provided. Over 80% of Pennsylvania schools were-and still are- closed for the Monday after Thanksgiving opener, reflecting its deep roots in our culture.

Despite the majority of hunters expressing opposition to the change, the schedule remains in place. Perceptive benefits promised from the change have not materialized, while the losses to tradition, community, and local economies are clear. Our group of dedicated hunters have invested significant time, and resources to advocate for the return of the Monday opener, but we need your help to continue this important work. Funds raised will go directly toward outreach, advertising, and advocacy efforts-not to reimburse our organizers for their personal expenses they provide, but to ensure our voices are heard and our traditions are preserved.
