A luminous journey through Oakland/Bay Area cultural life and artistic legacy, Grand Performance is a celebration of the arts in all their diversity, in Oakland, San Francisco and beyond. The mural projects a joyous, living portrayal of the dancers, authors, musicians, and artists and who have nourished the imaginative ground on which our beloved Oakland stands. For generations of Oaklanders the mural has provided a backdrop to the lives of the thousands of people who ride the bus, or drive or walk by the mural every day.
For over 40 years the Grand Performance mural has withstood everything the elements have thrown at it, wind, rain, soot, pigeon poop and more to provide beauty and life to the 580 underpass on Grand Avenue near the Grand Lake Theater. But now the mural is badly faded and flaking and in need of major repair. With your support we will bring the mural back to its original vibrancy and beauty for all to enjoy.
The original creators Keith Sklar and Daniel Galvez will be joined by a team of highly skilled local muralists eager to bring Grand Performance back to its best life.
With your help we will begin cleaning and painting in July 2026. We need to secure funding to scaffold, pressure-wash, prepare and prime the wall, purchase Nova Color acrylic paints, and pay the team of artists to repaint the mural and coat and seal it with high quality varnish and sealer. We expect the work to take no more than six to eight weeks.
Every donation gets us closer to bringing Grand Performance back to its original splendor. Please join us in revitalizing this Oakland gem.
