Restore some dignity after Hurricane Melissa - Montego Bay

I sit here in the UK, thousands of miles from the place I still call home, staring at photos and videos on my phone that I can barely bring myself to look at.

My name is Alric, and I was raised in Westgreen, Montego Bay, a community that shaped who I am today. My mother still lives there. It's where I took my first steps and made my fondest memories. And now, it's been completely devastated by Hurricane Melissa.

My heart is heavy. That's the only way I can describe it.

The calls and messages from back home have been heartbreaking. My mother's voice cracking as she describes wading through sewage-filled water in her own living room. My childhood friend sending photos of the community we grew up in, now completely contaminated with mud and sewage. My elderly neighbours, who have no one to help them clear the filth from their homes because everyone is struggling with their own disaster.

I've seen the images. I've heard the desperation in their voices. And from here in the UK, I feel powerless, but I refuse to do nothing.
Hurricane Melissa didn't just damage homes. It created a health emergency that worsens with each passing day. Drainage systems are completely blocked. Drains that once kept our streets clean are now clogged with debris, creating stagnant, disease-breeding pools of contaminated water. Families are living in toxic conditions where homes are filled with mud mixed with sewage. It's only a matter of time before people get sick, before children develop rashes and respiratory problems.

The elderly, already vulnerable, are facing life-threatening conditions. They desperately need help. Students have lost everything. The schools have no books. The libraries are destroyed. Children who were working so hard to build their futures now have no textbooks, no materials, nothing to continue their education. Our most vulnerable are suffering. The elderly and sick have lost their medications, their clean bedding, their basic dignity. Without proper cleaning supplies and sanitation, we're facing potential outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, and other waterborne illnesses and we know that disease is a ticking time bomb.

I may be in the UK now, but that community raised me. Those people are my people. I cannot stand by and watch them struggle alone.

Here's exactly how I intend to use every dollar donated. I will clean up and restore homes, especially for the elderly and less fortunate who cannot do this work themselves. I will paint homes, helping restore dignity and livability for those who have lost so much. I will purchase books to replace the educational materials that children lost in the floods. I will buy medications, providing essential medicines for the elderly and sick who can no longer access or afford them. I will provide cleaning and sanitation supplies, disinfectants and materials to prevent disease outbreaks.
The people back home aren't asking for handouts. They're strong, resilient, and resourceful. But Hurricane Melissa was catastrophic, and they simply cannot recover alone. They need help, real, practical help, to begin putting the pieces back together.

I feel a responsibility to do whatever I can from here. The devastation in Westgreen is more than numbers, it’s the loss of home, hope, and safety for people I love. Your support isn’t just charity; it’s a lifeline for families fighting to survive and rebuild. Together, we can restore dignity, health, and opportunity with one donation, one shared message, one act of kindness at a time.
Please, stand with us now and help turn heartbreak into hope and let this community know they are not forgotten.

If you can contribute in any way, whether through donations, supplies, connections to relief organisations, or simply spreading the word, you'll be helping not just a community, but my community.
Please, help me help them. Every bit of assistance brings hope to people who desperately need it.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
