Help restore Great Northern locomotive 3059
The Fort Buford 6th Infantry Association is raising funds to restore Great Northern locomotive 3059 in Williston, North Dakota. Ben Gjorven, president of the 6th Infantry, is organizing this effort on behalf of the group to preserve an important piece of local railroad history. Donated to the Williston Park Board on August 2, 1958 by the president of the Great Northern Railway, this locomotive has stood as a visible part of Williston’s story for generations. After decades of exposure to the elements, time has taken a serious toll, and 3059 now needs careful work to protect and preserve it for the future.
Donations will go directly to the restoration project, including asbestos abatement, lead paint removal, repainting the locomotive in its historic Glacier Park scheme, and installing a new interpretive panel for 3059, the NP caboose it is coupled to, and the historic 1910 Williston station. The goal is to complete this work before the locomotive’s 70th anniversary of park duty in August 2028. Ben Gjorven and the 6th Infantry invite the community and all friends of railroad history to help preserve this important piece of Williston’s past. Every contribution will help honor the legacy of those who worked on the rails and ensure that future generations can continue to learn from and appreciate locomotive 3059.
