My name is Kayla, and I’m writing this as Rob’s daughter. I can’t fully express the emotional, physical, and mental impact of watching my dad — the man who raised me on his own and kept me safe my entire life — lose so much of his dignity.
Seeing him cry, seeing him struggle in ways I never imagined, has been one of the hardest experiences of my life.
My dad’s health has declined significantly since being displaced. Every day feels like survival mode — constant fight‑or‑flight, never knowing what crisis will come next.
I honestly can’t remember the last time we were able to simply relax and spend time together. Instead, our days are spent trying to navigate a system that is clearly broken.
In Guelph, all homelessness services operate under one coordinated system (Stepping Stone / Shelter Diversion). There are no other independent shelters, no alternative intake points, and no backup options.
When someone is restricted from that system, they are left with nothing.
I don’t own a home. I rent, and my tenancy agreement legally prevents me from moving anyone in who isn’t on the lease. If I could bring him home, I would.
Instead, I see him daily and support him in every way I can — but I cannot provide the medical, financial, or structural supports he needs to survive this.
Being forced out of shelter in the dead of winter — losing all of his belongings again — has pushed him even further into crisis. Yes, he has a temporary room until February 9th, but that does not solve the problem. After that, he will be forced back onto the streets in extreme weather, placing him at immediate and severe risk.
I am trying to build a real bridge out of homelessness for my dad — something stable, humane, and long‑term. Something the system has failed to provide.
Your support will help with:
- Extended stay at a motel or private room
- Nutrition and basic living needs
- Replacing essential belongings (prescription glasses, clothing, etc.)
- First and last month’s rent
- Essential items for stable housing
- Trauma‑informed supports to help him regain stability.
This fundraiser is not about shortcuts. It is about giving my dad a safe, stable, and dignified alternative after being left behind by the very system meant to protect him.
Thank you for taking the time to understand his situation. Even if you cannot donate, sharing this helps more than you know.
— Kayla
