HELP NEEDED. We are seeking to raise £10,000 to complete the restoration of the historic Brontë Church Steps - the iconic stone staircase that links the cobbles of Haworth Main Street to St. Michael & All Angels Haworth Parish Church and onward to The Brontë Parsonage, a site deeply woven into the village’s heritage and literary legacy.

For generations, these steps have been a beloved backdrop for photographs and a welcome resting seat for locals and visitors alike. Over time they have become unsafe and are now partly closed due to the very real risk of collapse.

Working closely with our architect, Bradford Council’s conservation office, and other local partners, we’ve developed a sensitive and respectful plan to fully renew and restore the steps, including the addition of a handrail for safety. While the new stone will initially stand out, it has been carefully chosen to blend in over time, ensuring the restoration remains in keeping with the character of the village. Given the size of the stone treads and the structural work required beneath them, this is a significant undertaking, with an estimated cost of £30,000. Thanks to the generosity of the Stanbury Land Trustees, Wyedean Weaving, Ashlar Stone, and proceeds from local fundraising events, the church has already secured £20,000.

The Steps are part of our shared heritage, so with the support of our village community (church, residents and businesses), tourists, and Brontë enthusiasts we hope to raise the final £10-15,000. Even a small donation of just £2.50 can help us reach our goal and safeguard this cherished landmark. With your support, we hope to begin work in mid to late 2026, ensuring the Brontë Church Steps continue to welcome future generations.

Important: If donations exceed the final cost of restoration, extra funds will go toward installing a second handrail, seasonal decorations, floral planters, and ongoing maintenance to keep the steps safe and welcoming.
