Reside is an initiative of Raising the Roof's, that aims to prevent homelessness by increasing the number of affordable housing units within local communities. This is achieved by renovating vacant and abandoned homes into environmentally sustainable and affordable units. Once renovated, these homes are offered to people who are either at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness.
In addition, Reside has further social impact. Each construction site creates opportunities for people facing barriers to employment, to build a career in the trades. We have partnered with Building Up, to employ 80 people to complete the renovations of our two current properties. Building Up graduates are then linked to an apprenticeship in the trade of their choice. Into My Home >
Into My Home is part of Reside, Raising the Roof’s initiative to provide supportive housing for young people in danger of becoming homeless. Reside was launched in August, 2018 and is one of the first projects of its kind in Ontario.
Into My Home is not a shelter; it is not a halfway house or group home. It is a place a young person destined for the streets can live and get practical help so they can eventually go out on their own. Young adults will be recommended by a front-line agency that sees young people struggling every day just to get by. Each home will have live-in support people to instruct and explain life-skills such as budgeting, managing a home, food shopping and preparation, and hygiene.
By partnering with innovative social enterprises, Reside projects go beyond the social impact of providing homes. For example, Into My Homeis partnering with Building Up, a not-for-profit enterprise, who have employed 80 people to complete renovations to these properties. Building Up trains participants and link graduates to a trade apprenticeship, which helps them to break through barriers to employment they may otherwise face.
Endeavour Centre is a non-profit organization that trains individuals who learn skills that put them at the forefront of green building. Through all their partnerships, Reside is creating solutions to the problems that at-risk young people face.
All residents will have a private room and use of common space such as a kitchen. One home in North York is scheduled for completion this fall. Another home has begun in the Caledon area, but a completion date is yet to be determined.
Raising the Roof believes that a private, permanent living space is a fundamental right and that providing supports, before life becomes too hard to handle, can keep people from a life on the street.
With $100,000, we can complete one home, providing housing for Amanda and others facing homelessness.
With $200,000, we can continue to expand this initiative. Our long-term goal is to renovate 10 homes across Canada. The Campaign >
