Hi Everyone,
If you are reading this then you might already know a bit about me from the documentary Lead Me Home, but I’d like to tell you a bit more. From the start, I had a rough childhood - alcoholism and abuse in my family made me think that nobody cared about me. I ended up on the street, sleeping in tents under bridges and searching for love from other people.
When the film was being made I was going through an extremely hard time in my life. I had previously been unhoused for two years, and my mother had recently passed away from cancer. I didn’t even know she was sick because she didn’t tell anyone, so it was a total shock. I was in a really dark place until God gave me a chance to wake up and strive to do better. An old friend suggested I contact Mercy Housing and they started the process of getting me into supportive housing and also introduced me to the Downtown Streets Team, which became my new family. Luis and the others that I met through DST have been there for me like I’ve been there for them, and we’re all helping each other get into housing and keep it. I’ve been housed for almost three years now, and I love helping people with the application to get into my building when units open up - I’m working on getting Luis to move in right now, so hopefully he’ll be my neighbor soon!
Today, I’m starting this GoFundMe because I know I can do more for people who I haven’t even met yet. My big goal is to set up a non-profit which helps people navigate the supportive services available and guides them while they get into permanent housing. I know my life experience has put me in the best possible position to really help others get through their dark periods and back into the safety and security that being housed has given me. The money from this fund will help me start building my organization and connecting with all the people out there who need our help. I know there are ways we can streamline the system and make it easier for people to get into housing, and I’m looking forward to bringing my experience to the table and working to solve this problem.
Thank you for reading and God bless you all,
Resheemah “RoRo” White
