Ghana Medical Mission Trip
Donation protected
Greetings everyone!
My name is Bernard Ndedi and I just completed my second year of medical school at Howard University College of Medicine (HUCM). But before I begin my third year, I will be traveling abroad to Ghana to provide medical care and improve upon what I have learned thus far.
I, along with with 8 other medical students, will be volunteering for three weeks at Narh-Bita hospital in Tema, Ghana. Tema lies on the outskirts of Accra, where the standard of healthcare drops significantly and there is a critical shortage of trained medical professionals to provide basic healthcare services. Residents sometimes go months or years without seeing medical providers and the addition of our team will have a positive impact on the community. Throughout this service trip, I will have the opportunity to assist local physicians in providing much-needed care, rotate through various specialties, and gain an invaluable perspective on the local healthcare system. As the vice-president of the International Medicine Interest Group (the group with whom I am traveling), I believe that experiences like these are imperative to achieving Howard’s mission of serving the underserved.
The money raised through GoFundMe will go towards paying for my flight ($1500), accommodations for three weeks ($945), meals ($300), vaccinations for endemic diseases ($550), and travel documents ($205).
As a first generation immigrant from Cameroon, I witnessed and experienced many lapses in medical care. This simple fact is my sole motivating factor for becoming a doctor. Volunteering in Ghana this summer will be invaluable in helping me develop the medical skills and humanism necessary to become a great physician.
