When these young Caribbean women were barely more than teenagers, they saw the adverts in the British newspapers asking for help to run the newly formed NHS.

So they put on their best clothes, kissed their mums goodbye at the docks and came to Britain to work as nurses.

They worked tirelessly and often faced prejudice and hostility from their patients.

Their efforts helped keep the NHS and the country going for decades.

Now they are retired. But they still meet up at their beloved Positive Network social club in Balham, South London.

They go there to share a hot meal, listen to Jim Reeves, try chair yoga and talk about the old days. They play bingo, do quizzes but above all, they look after one another.

For many of these women, the club is a lifeline.

Sadly, many members have passed away over the years, and the other day, after years of loyal service, their minibus finally went to the great scrapyard in the sky.

Without it, many of these women can no longer get to the club to see their friends. The charity cannot distribute food bank donations without the bus and will be unable to take the ladies to hospital visits and outings.

When Britain asked for help, these women came. Now they need our help. So we are trying to raise money for a new minibus.

The club aren’t looking for a brand-new bus, and needs around £18,000 to get a second-hand one.

Every little donation will be a huge help in keeping these remarkable ladies mobile.
