For nine years, I've marked my July 5 birthday by asking the people I love to give to Repair the World. This year, a $15,000 matching gift means every dollar you give is doubled. My goal: raise $15,000 by July 31.
This spring, I led a Mother's Day event with Repair the World, Congregation Emanu-El, and Hamilton Families, making bouquets and care kits for moms experiencing homelessness. As a mom of three, this is exactly how I wanted to spend it.
That same month at City Hope in the Tenderloin, I served meals saying people's names over and over. Their founder taught us: dignity isn't in the meal, it's in the name. One guest told me about his baby, the same age as my littlest, Eliza, and how he's trying to get clean to spend more time with him.
The most repeated commandment in the Torah is to care for your neighbor. It's the world I want my children to grow up in.
Whether it's $18, $180, $1,800, or $18,000 (a girl can dream…). Will you celebrate with me?
P.S. Gifts through a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) are always welcome. And if you've ever considered a major gift, consider joining Repair's Solel Collective as an inaugural member at $10,000 or more.
