Repair of Valiant Soldier Buckfastleigh
Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit THE BUCKFASTLEIGH TRUST, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to us.
The Valiant Soldier is a 'time capsule' museum. The public house itself closed in 1965, the landlord and landlady remaining upstairs in their accommodation. The bars were left with beer in the barrels, money in the till and cigarettes in the ash-trays. Nothing was touched until the landlord and his wife passed away. The pub was then purchased by Teignbridge District Council, a trust was set up and the premises adjacent purchased to make a larger display area. It is run by volunteers.
The actual building is 18th century and currently in need of some urgent repairs. Last year there was a lot of leakage around two of the chimneys (there are 3) and we are concerned both about the building itself and our artifacts, especially in view of the amount of rain we get in Devon. The total cost for all chimney/roof repairs has been quoted as about £12,000 but we have thought that we may be able to do one chimney at a time. In addition we need to carry some vital work to the exterior of the building.
Please help us to carry out this vital work.
