We're a group of community members organizing funds for 35+ families in the Twin Cities who are afraid to leave their homes due to the recent events in our neighborhoods. To protect our families' privacy and safety, we are keeping their identities and specifics anonymous.
Our families range, on average, from 4 to 8 members per household. Many families are sheltering in place with young children, elderly parents, and siblings or other relatives. Income-earners have been forced to stay home due to fear of harassment, detainment, or deportation, and some families have been unable to go to work since December.
The neighbors we are supporting desperately want to return to work, in part due to fear of eviction now that many of them are behind on rent payments. All funds raised will be used for rent, utility costs, and back-pay on housing bills. These costs average around $1,500 - $2,000 per family. Rent assistance will help ease the pressure these families face, and allow them to continue sheltering in place for the duration of the increased risk in our community.
