Hi, my name is Chris. Monday, 01/03/2022, a welfare check was placed for Ms. Nancy after a large limb broke off the top of a tree and came crashing down onto her roof, right above her bed; causing a hole in the roof. Of course, this couldn't have happened at a worse time. It had been raining non-stop for hours and was still raining. Her room flooded causing water damage to her roof, wall, and flooring. This is one of the least of worries as the insurance is going to be fixing these issues. While speaking and listening to Ms. Nancy as she was emotionally and physically distraught, I learned that her living conditions went much further than just having to deal with a hole in the roof.
Ms. Nancy had worked for years in retirement homes assisting others only to have lost her job in 2019. Nancy attempted to continue working but her body was letting her know that it was time to stop working. Now, at the age of 63, Ms. Nancy lives alone in the Clover community and is having a hard time with the upkeep of her home. After losing 4 of her siblings in such a short time, Nancy remains at home most of the time unfortunately worrying about her bills and praying to God that eventually her prayers would be answered about having her home back in the shape she dreams of.
Ms. Nancy explained that she runs a little space heater in her living room in an attempt to stay warm. She mentioned that she has gas fire logs but is unable to afford both electricity and gas bill, especially now that we have entered the 3 coldest months of the year.
After hearing her story and seeing her conditions, I couldn't just leave being satisfied with just knowing she was okay after the limb fell on the roof. I knew God sent me to that call to answer her prayer for assistance. I recently met Annette Abouisa, who is well known in the Clover community for keeping citizens informed, and immediately told her about the conditions of Ms. Nancy. We both knew right away there was more that we could do.
After being in contact with Ms. Nancy, we learned that she had fallen behind on her electrical bill and was more than $250 behind and still having trouble paying the current month's electricity. Annette immediately started making phone calls to her friends and contacts she has in the Clover community. In almost no time, we had found Ms. Nancy some relief on her electricity bill. A church pledged to pay more than $350 to catch her up on her electricity bill. Allison Love, York County District Two council, also assisted with raising $450 towards our cause which is tremendously helpful.
I soon met a very nice kind-hearted woman, Luanne Walden, who donated flooring and a TV as well as $250 towards pest control services. We are very blessed to have so many members of the community willing to join in and assist Ms. Nancy to get back on her feet once again. Renovations to the home to include repaired porches, new flooring, bathroom renovation, plumbing work, and other services are soon to follow. We couldn't make this possible without the help of the public.
