Remembering Sandra Castillo

On Tuesday, February 22, 2022, thunder boomed and roared, hail hurled, and the rains drenched the Earth as the Heavens opened and welcomed our much-loved friend and coworker, Sandra Castillo, home. After a fierce fight against cancer, Sandra left this world cancer free, rejoicing with her God and Savior!

Sandra worked at College of the Sequoias for over twenty-three years beginning in the Mini Corps Office and then moving into her position as Clerical Assistant in the EOPS/CARE Office. Sandra quickly became the face, the official greeter, welcoming all students, Student Services Staff, instructors, and anyone dropping in for direction. Sandra was a beacon of light; she exuded positivity and had a contagious uplifting personality. She loved nothing more than giving from her heart to everyone she came to know including our EOPS students. Our students soon became “mijo” or “mija” and were referred to as such once Sandra got to know them. She truly cared and gave of herself, lifting and motivating our EOPS/CARE/COS students knowing many had little to no support systems in place.

Sandra was a loving, dedicated, and extraordinary single mother to her children, Christian and Jay’Den. They were her everything in all she did. They were her life and her reason to see another day. She tirelessly sacrificed to provide them with the life she wished for. Her steadfast influence taught them to become kind, empathetic, loving, and independent individuals. Sandra’s legacy will live on in her beautiful children.

We will forever miss Sandra; our EOPS/CARE Office and staff will never be the same. A huge void is now present. Although our hearts are broken, we feel ever so blessed to have been a part of Sandra’s day-to-day life and COS family. The laughter, special moments, and lively conversations we often shared will forever be cherished and in our hearts.
