Remembering Amy: Support Her Cause & Family
Donation protected
In April of 2024, we lost my sister, Amy. Amy was one of a kind. She will be greatly missed, and I know in my heart of hearts she touched many people with her infectious sense of humor and wit.
In the wake of this loss, my mom will become the primary caretaker of her two young children. I am starting this fundraiser to help my mom with expenses related to her passing.
While the details of Amy’s health and passing were complicated, it goes without saying we wish things had gone differently. My goal with this fundraiser is not only to help my mom, but to raise awareness for addiction treatment. We will be donating half of the money raised to The BreakAway. The BreakAway is a recovery home in New Albany, IN for women struggling with addiction.
Substance abuse is a chronic and treatable medical condition. When Amy was committed to AA, I saw these treatments work. The stigma around addiction creates barriers to seeking treatment including negative social stereotypes. Guilt and shame may cause people struggling with addiction to continue to make their illness worse. Supporting a recovery home like The BreakAway is a way to support those struggling, reduce the stigma, and help our communities.
I realize not everyone is in a position financially to donate, in which case I ask you to consider your perspective on substance use disorder and how you may address any unconscious bias you may have on the subject.
Thank you for reading this and thank you for helping us remember Amy.
