Remembering 1864:From Fort Chambers to Sand Creek
Tax deductible
Re-membering 1864...From Fort Chambers to Sand Creek...The Future is NOW is a public memorial and reflection to educate residents of Boulder Valley about the role residents of Boulder, Colorado played in one of the worst war crimes in US history: the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864.
The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma are direct descendants of the survivors of the massacre. They will present their perspectives on this event through singing, storytelling, and narration. They will recount their history from 1864 to now. Facing our past with humility, honesty, and courage, we will reflect on the future the original and current inhabitants of Boulder Valley can create together.
This event is being co-produced by The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, The Remembrance Planning Circle Boulder, and Culture In Place, in partnership with Creative Nations and The Dairy Arts Center. Creative Nations and the Dairy Arts Center are offering their talents, collaboration, theater, and lobby for this event.
An incredible amount of volunteer research, planning, and collaboration have gone into making this event a reality. The physical and emotional costs of embedding oneself in this history are immense, as the historical facts and devastation to the First Peoples of this land are almost impossible to conceive of or believe.
Justice and restitution in the Boulder Valley require an all-out community effort. Any monetary contribution to this particular moment in this effort will be equally significant - no matter how small or how large.
We are asking for donations to help cover the costs of:
- Travel and accommodation for Tribal presenters and their families coming from Oklahoma
- Honoraria for Tribal Elders, singers, storytellers, and narrators coming from Oklahoma
- Videography and post-production for educational and artistic purposes
- Writing, design, creation, and printing of script, website, programs, posters etc.
- Research materials & time; administrative and coordination time and expertise
Donations of any size will give Arapaho and Cheyenne a warm welcome in their own homelands, as we all work towards truth, restitution, and healing.
