Temporary caregiver fund for Bryce

Update: 4/14 ~ Bryce is up and around on crutches and wheelchair.

Hi I am Bryce’s mom and I am fundraising for my son who had a horrible accident while we were out of town. He was flown by Medical Plane to Children’s Hospital Oakland. Bryce has a broken femur. They did surgery and he can barely move but there has been some improvement. They put a metal rod through his femur and screws. He has been in excruciating pain.

Bryce will need to be home for a while and can't be left alone. I am his only caregiver and take care of him 100% of the time. Bryce can barely stand up with crutches. He is going to need a wheelchair for a while and graduate to a walker later and after crutches but he is expected to make a full recovery eventually.

My financial situation is uncertain during his recovery period. My job is our only source of income. As of Friday I am now out of sick leave. I have put in for an unpaid leave of absence for 6 weeks as I am trying to navigate on what to do. I don't qualify for FMLA or California paid family leave because FMLA you have had to be employed for at least 12 months and the Ca paid fam leave you have to pay into SDI and I don't with this job. I took a new job this school year teaching in Napa. With teaching they don’t offer disability you have to sign up for Disability Insurance and when I took this job I did not. He is expected to fully recover I think within 6 months so he won’t qualify for SSI. To qualify for disability it has to be a disability that is expected to last longer than a year or life long. I am trying to find ways I can supplement my income while I am caregiving for him for a few weeks (time uncertain) until he can be safe on his own.

These funds are to help get us through until I can return to work or figure something else out. Please help if you can. Any donation is greatly appreciated. Thank you all for you love, positive thoughts and support during this difficult time.

Update:
We saw the surgeon on Monday. I need to be his caregiver for 5 weeks; that’s about how long it will take for him to be safe on his own. He should fully recover within six months to a year.

Disability insurance ~America Fidelity is who my employer uses for disability plans. I emailed them and they replied, “the plans we have will not cover you being out to care for someone else.” I’m looking into other plans for the future.

IHSS ~ my income is over the threshold.

Online teaching ~ I don’t know about online teaching, most virtual schools require a fully credentialed teacher. My credential is still not cleared because I need to pass the RICA (hopefully soon). I don’t know if I would want to online reach long term I only need to get through this period 5 weeks then it’s almost summer. We should be okay by August.

Sub differentiation~ sub deduct only applies when it is for your own illness.

Catastrophic leave ~ I don’t qualify for catastrophic leave through my work because his injury is not life-threatening or terminal.

We should be okay and will get through the 5 weeks with the go fund me. Thank you to all!!! Thank you for your prayers, support, thoughts and advice. Thank you for your donations!!! ❤️‍♥️
