Background: On October 20th, the California First Appellate District Court of Appeal found that CDCR and San Quentin State Prison violated the 8th Amendment rights of all incarcerated people at San Quentin during the COVID-19 outbreak by subjecting them to cruel and unusual punishment. This failure resulted in nearly 30 deaths of incarcerated people and over 2,200 positive cases at San Quentin alone in one of the most catastrophic COVID-19 outbreaks in the nation. The only solution to a deadly pandemic during the age of mass incarceration and overcrowded prisons is mass releases now!
Ella Baker Center press release about the ruling here.
The Ask: Let's show CDCR and CA Governor Newsom that we support large-scale releases from San Quentin State Prison, and we are ready to receive our incarcerated community members and support their transitions back into society.
Join us for a "Releases Not Transfers" Town Hall on Saturday Nov. 7th, 2-3:30 pm PT. Register here.
The #StopSanQuentinOutbreak Coalition is working to support organizations that help folks reenter society and find their footing after surviving the COVID outbreak in California's prison system. We will distribute equally all the funds raised to Sistas With Voices, the Bay Area Freedom Collective , Bonafide, as well as mutual aid support for formerly incarcerated trans community members.
