Since August of 2022, over 8,000 refugees have arrived in Chicago. Refugees who arrive in Chicago have fled economic, social, and political upheaval and danger at home. They travel thousands of miles and over multiple countries to land at the border in Texas and be transported to other sanctuary cities, like Chicago. But the question is, where do they go? Despite the City of Chicago opening and adding multiple shelters, there is simply not enough space to house all the refugees. In the interim, refugees primarily "live" at the City of Chicago's district police stations. Think back to the last time you visited a local government building and then try to visualize sleeping on the floors. The stations are not equipped to house people -- they lack hot water, shower, bedding, food, and other basic needs. Across Chicago, volunteers have been working to meet these needs but the needs grow every day with new arrivals.
Every station needs different things. At 25, our goal is to our new neighbors -- Nuevos Vecinos -- find some security in a brand new and overwhelming environment.
Thank you for donating.
