Refugee to refugee

My name is Sarah Mardini.
I was born in the Capital of Syria, Damascus. Because of the on going war I had to leave my country, my home.

In August 2015 my house was bombed into pieces. I had to leave my country and later get into a small unsafe and overcrowded boat, with my 17 year old sister Ysra .

After fifteen minute the engine on our boat died, some  of the men in the boat jumped into the water and started pulling the boat towards the Greek island of Lesvos. The boat starts to take in water and the panic is spreading among the people inside the boat.
I am a professional long distance swimmer so I stood up, turned around and jumped into the dark sea.
I grabbed the boat with one hand and started to force the boat forward, towards Lesvos.
My sister Ysra joined me in the water, she is also an professional swimmer.

Together we pull the boat for three and half hours until we finally reached the beach of Lesvos .

We then took the ferry to Athens, after that we continued our journey by walking, car and train, we arrrived safely in the Capital of Germany, Berlin, after a long and dangerous journey.

Now I am working as a volunteer and rescuer in Greece on the island of Lesvos, the very island that I arrived to during my journey to Europe in August 2015. I work with helping the people arrive safely when they arrive with refugee boats on the beaches of Lesvos.

I am also a public speaker for the refugees and I fight for the Human Rights by holding speeches all over the world.

I need your support to be able to keep up with my work.

THANK YOU!
