Refugee Mushroom Permaculture Farming in Uganda
Hi, I am Zoe fundraising on behalf of Elijah Astute from Bio-Green a Ugandan-based refugee permaculture organisation. They already do regular permaculture workshops and have vegetable gardens within the Nakivale refugee camp aimed at providing food security to the community. But they are looking to expand to mushroom farming to provide income for 25 refugee farmers and their families.
Oyster mushrooms have been chosen due to their nutritional value, quick yield, small area to grow, ability to suppy regular spawn, as well as commercial saleability. This is a new innovative enterprise that has not been done in the Nakivale camp before.
The money you donate will be used to give targetted permaculture training to the 25 refugee farmers, to buy needed supplies to build a mushroom lab that can yield 100kg of mushrooms, and to provide ongoing training and support to the chosen farmers.
We know that almost everyone is experiencing cost-of-living struggles currently but refugees are amongst the most disadvantaged globally. If you can spare even $5, the market price of 1kg of Oyster mushrooms in Uganda, these 25 farmers will be on their way to becoming financially independent and self-sufficent.
Thank you
Zoe and Elijah
