Help Brock Create a Kinder World :)

Donation protected
COVID-19 UPDATE: Now, more than ever, I believe that it is important that we show appreciation for front-line workers, volunteers, grocery store clerks, and all those who have been hard at work, putting their hearts into supporting their communities. I'm sure that many of you have taken part in the 7 o'clock cheer at least once already - I'd like to go one step further with this campaign by putting that gratitude directly into the hands of the people we've been directing it towards. Read the description of the original project below to see how you can help to spread gratitude and kindness to your local first responders and front line workers today:

I’ve initiated a NOT-FOR-PROFIT project I believe can create a kinder world: one book, one act of kindness at a time. I'm raising $50,000 to GIFT my Reflections books to people in need of inspiration. Those gifted a book will be encouraged to commit an act of kindness. I'll be donating $1 per book for the first 2,000 books! Along with your donations we can make a huge positive difference.

My Story - My Calling

A lot of us suffer at different times in our lives, and often in silence. I was one of these people. When I was in university, no one knew that I was struggling with long bouts of depression, addiction issues, and sometimes even serious thoughts of suicide. It was a very difficult and painful time for me.

In part fuelled by the desperate need to escape my emotional pain, I climbed on my bicycle and started riding, with no particular destination in mind. Well, I rode…and rode…and rode…what ended up being 16,000 km/10,000 miles around North America! This was back in 1970 before touring was popular, so I was quite an anomaly!

That bicycle journey saved my life…and changed my life. It was a 16,000 km journey from my head back to my heart.

After nearly taking my life, I was inspired to give with my life. I rode my bicycle 'around' North America two more times (another 30,000 km!) to raise awareness for the importance of kindness and offering to speak at schools to prevent bullying.

The Way

As those you who know me are aware, I’ve also been active the past several decades volunteering organizing many large community events and concerts to inspire kindness, compassion, and connection, and co-founded the Kindness Foundation of Canada.

I’ve met A LOT of people through all these experiences. And one thing strikes me the most. Regardless of age, ethnicity, socioeconomic background or profession, it’s very rare to find a person who isn’t themselves, or has someone they know and love, dealing with depression, and/or addiction challenges. These affected people often experience painful loneliness, beat themselves up, and struggle to find the hope to live a vibrant and healthy life.

However, I believe there’s hope….and I believe that together we can make a difference. By focusing on being positive, kind and giving to others we can turn our lives around. And we can help others in pain turn their lives around too.

And that’s where this GoFundMe project comes in:

I’ve received SO MANY emails and letters about how my little Reflections books have transformed lives, as they have mine. One was a powerful message from a registered nurse named Kathleen. It really moved me:

“I bought your book ‘Reflections – for living life fully’ in 1991 while my daughter was in VGH undergoing a bone marrow transplant. It has been a source of consolation to me all these years. ...Thank you for your wise words.”
- Kathleen
(Kathleen‘s daughter passed away in 1992 at the young age of 25.)

My Reflections books contain thoughts inspired by listening to my heart during my bicycle trips. So many people have shared that reflecting on these thoughts have brought them out of their minds to a more peaceful and kinder place in their hearts. Reading the simple yet profound aphorisms shifts people's perspectives, creating more meaning and purpose to their lives.

"...i was told i'd be out-of-my-mind
                 to go after my dreams...
         now that i've gotten
                               out of my mind
                        by following my heart,
                                 i'm living my dreams."

My vision is to gift the Reflections books to the people who really need some positive inspiration. And I’d appreciate your help!

Together, we can change lives.

(I’ve got a few of those powerful life-altering stories you can read further below!)

So how does my project work?

My goal is to raise $50,000 to gift my Reflections books and inspire acts of kindness!!

Books from my Reflections series will be gifted to various groups, for example:

- First responders
- Volunteers
- Nurses
- Teachers
- Indigenous Peoples
- People struggling with addiction issues
- People struggling with mental health challenges
- People serving time

Individuals gifted a book will be encouraged to commit a simple act of kindness.  The books will be locally distributed in Vancouver, BC initially, however, our goal is to have the ripple effect of kindness spread worldwide.

To get the campaign started, I will be donating $1 per book for the first 2,000 books.

Each book costs $3.50. In addition, there are costs associated with taxes, shipping and all the expenses of storing and distributing the books to various locations.

Note: This is an entirely non-profit project. All funds will be allocated to gifting books.

I want to share my message of kindness, touch and connect hearts, inspire hope, and hopefully bring a smile to many faces! I would be incredibly grateful if you choose to contribute to this important cause of spreading kindness. If this is something you believe in, I would greatly appreciate you sharing it with your friends and contacts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media. THANK YOU!!

A Life Transformed.   I was speaking at a teacher's conference in Grande Prairie, Alberta. As I was about to start my 'talk,' a big tough looking guy stood up and started to talk! He said, "Sorry to interrupt, but I need to say something! A few years ago I was dealing with major addiction issues and I was very close to 'taking my life.' A friend gave me a copy of one of your 'Reflections' books and it turned around my life. I just want to express my gratitude for this gift that saved my life and now made it possible for me to be here and to teach young people!" There wasn't a dry eye in the audience and it reaffirmed how much I want to get my books of 'thoughts,' that came 'through' me on my bike trips, out to as many people as possible.

A Last Request.  I received a letter from a woman whose favourite grandmother 'passed on' and her granny's last request was to be buried with one of my 'Reflections' books. That really moved me.

A Profound Synchronicity.   I was in the downtown east side, and there was a young woman in bad shape dealing with her addictions and homelessness and I went up to her to talk with her...she was bent over with a sack on her back and her big black purse on the ground opened up and full of 'stuff'...in her bag was one of my books all well-read and tattered. I said to her that she had my book in her purse...she said: "What is your name?" I replied, "Brock" and she said, "Tully"? It was a precious moment of two hearts touching!

KINDNESS is so beautiful and life-changing because it doesn't matter if we give or receive or just observe an act of kindness, it is all the same...we receive in the 'moment' of giving and vice versa.

It's important to me that people know that I still struggle, too often, on my journey... However, since writing my Reflections books, I follow my heart much more, and I’m learning and growing every day. I believe in the power of taking action. If we wait until we ‘have it all together,’ we would never take the chance to reach out and follow our 'calling.’ Though at times I may falter, and I'm not always kind, I do want to see a kinder world in which we can all grow and thrive. With your support, I believe we can do it.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and considering supporting my GoFundMe project.

With gratitude,

Brock Tully
