Support Shamley Green Village Hall redevelopment Buy-a-Brick
Shamley Green Village (Arbuthnot) Hall Buy-a-Brick Campaign launches!
Support the redevelopment of the Shamley Green Village Hall by buying or gifting a brick for £50. Why donate? Read on for why this century-old hall needs our help and love.
The Arbuthnot Hall is the Shamley Green Village Hall located on the Cricket Green in the heart of our village. It has long been a well-used, vibrant community hub. But despite being well loved parts of it are dilapidated and it’s in need of major redevelopment for which full planning permission was granted in September 2024.
Fundraising to reach our goal so building can begin is already in full swing. Would you like to help us reach our goal of securing the village hall for future generations? Read on for how you can Buy-a-Brick, or just plain old donate! All gifts are warmly welcomed and will create a lasting legacy for the community and neighbours of Shamley Green.
The fundraising group has been in top gear since planning was granted in September and has already received pledges of over half a million towards the £1.6 million goal. This fantastic amount has been pledged by local people, existing clubs using the hall, Wonersh Parish Council and the Wonersh Foundation.
Our bid for a share of the Surrey County Council Your Fund was submitted in November 2024 and we’re preparing bids for other grant giving organisations for submission in the New Year.
As you’d expect there’s a full calendar of activity and fundraising events at the hall too, check out the programme here: https://www.arbuthnothall.org
The important bit: How you can get involved!
There are lots of ways to get involved but one of the lasting ways is to make a donation and become a Friend of the Arbuthnot Hall. Every gift makes you a Friend (except for donors who’d like to remain anonymous), you can read more about what becoming a Friend means here: https://www.arbuthnothall.org/fundraising
Buying a brick for £50 ensures your name is registered and displayed in the hall. Gifting a brick might make the perfect birthday or anniversary present. Hit the button below and click to gift £50 to Buy-a-Brick and at the same time please ensure you supply your contact details and importantly the name of the lucky brick’s recipient for our register. Of course please donate whatever you would like, but for this particular campaign we’ll register brick donations in multiples of £50. Please see the Hall’s website for T&Cs below.
If you would like to adopt an area of the hall for a more sizeable donation the Chair would love to discuss what might be possible. Please contact us through the Arbuthnot Hall website and we’ll get in touch for a chat.
A bit of history: The hall was commissioned and paid for in 1904 by Elinor Arbuthnot in memory of her late husband. Elinor gave the land and building to a charitable trust to provide a ‘Village Hall for the use of the inhabitants of the [civil] Parish of Wonersh and the neighbourhood thereof without distinction of sex or political, religious or other opinions.’ It
remains a registered charity under the supervision of the Charity Commission Registered Charity: 305149.
It’s a valuable Arts and Crafts heritage hall designed by well-known local architect Charles Harrison Townsend. But it has had functional additions over the years which are now dilapidated and it needs major work to stay open. We want to secure this important community hub by redeveloping the fabric of the building, sustaining it into the future and supporting activity for many years to come.
