Redwing Cemetery cleanup began as a grassroots movement started by local Ron Sandoval along with a ‘band of merry primos’.   

The mission; to take care of a Huerfano County historic cemetery. This cemetery is located along CR 550 in Redwing, Huerfano County, Colorado.   Because cemeteries are part of our collective history, and their gravestones tell the stories of people of the community , it is critical that we preserve their history.

Ron Sandoval began getting the word out on the importance of the preservation of this historic cemetery.  We all understand the responsibility to protect this  burial site, as it  is  one of the most important links to our past.  He reminded us; this is the kind of effort that will keep a history alive for generations to come.    

And so - Ron began to facilitate massive clean-up efforts.

Within a few short years.  with the hard work and much effort from ‘primos’, you can see amazing results at Redwing Cemetery.  To honor and  respect the dead and protect  the memory of the past is an important part of our heritage.     

 Along with the  numerous volunteers needed to donate time in labor hours – may to complete the mission. 

Materials and resources are needed.   Needed items:  cedar fence posts for cemetery boundary, fencing (though when possible every attempt will be made to reuse historical fencing) , a retaining wall is needed to stop the erosion and loss  of the south end of the cemetery into the county road,  native grass/clover seed to avoid ongoing erosion, ecofriendly herbicide to  prevent   invasive and damaging  brush,  entrance gates, flyers/publicity to share the mission.
