What happened is narrated below in a message to me from Krystal

On the morning of February 5th, there was a two-hour school delay. Around 9:25 a.m., I left the house to drop all three of my kids off at school. After dropping off one daughter at our neighborhood school and the other in Alexandria, I was about five minutes from home when I saw fire trucks rushing down the main road toward my street.

Around that same time, I got a call from a neighbor asking if we were home. I told her no and asked if everything was okay. She then asked if anyone was in the house, and I told her just the dogs. She relayed that to the firemen, but by the time they were able to get to them, it was too late.

At that point, I was close enough to walk back. The neighbor met me so she could watch my youngest child while I went to the scene. I was in complete shock, trying to understand how this could have happened.

The fire started in the downstairs laundry room and burned through the hardwood floors above where the dogs were. The cause hasn’t been fully determined, but it may have been electrical.

Everything happened in less than 40 minutes. We lost our two puppies, and our home—where my kids grew up—was severely damaged. Our family is heartbroken and trying to take things one day at a time.
