Rebuilding Danny’s Life After the Fire

I’m creating this GoFundMe for Danny, my (step)dad, who has been in my life since I was about 3 years old.

Danny’s life has been defined by resilience.

Before I met him, he survived a horrific motorcycle accident that nearly took his life. His skull and leg were severely ground down by the pavement. Doctors told him he would never walk again, but Danny refused to accept that. When I met him, he walked with a cane. Through years of determination, healing, and sheer willpower, he not only walked on his own again, he rebuilt his life and went on to become a successful contractor, building homes to support our family.

In 2016, tragedy struck again. A fall caused two brain bleeds that left him in a coma. Because this was his second severe head injury, doctors weren’t sure he would survive, and if he did survive, they expected him to need full-time care, but once again, Danny fought his way back.

He and my mom permanently split after this, but I have and will always consider him my dad because he raised me and helped shape who I am today.

In 2023, he entered his first relationship after being with my mom. After nine months in this new relationship, his partner unexpectedly passed away in his bed. It crushed him, but somehow, he kept going.

Now, he’s facing yet another unimaginable loss.

On March 25, 2026, while Danny was away, a fire broke out in the RV he was living in. Everything he owned was destroyed. His clothes, food, personal belongings, and critical documents like his birth certificate, passport, and Social Security card. All of his cash also burned. (He’s old-school and doesn’t use a bank.)

The Fire Marshall was unable to determine the cause of the fire.

Ironically, one of the firefighters who responded to the scene was someone Danny had previously built a home for. That kind firefighter has generously offered Danny a place to stay for a few days while he tries to figure out what comes next.

Danny is now in his 60s and essentially starting over from nothing.

He is still working when he can, but the long-term damage from his motorcycle accident and head injuries is catching up with him. His leg and memory are deteriorating, making it harder and harder to continue working and stay financially stable. As a result, he did not have insurance on the RV, leaving him with no safety net.

Danny has overcome more hardship than most people face in a lifetime, and every time, he has found a way forward. He has never been one to ask for a handout and has always worked incredibly hard for what he has, but this time, he truly needs help.

We are raising funds to help him replace basic necessities like clothing and food, recover important documents, secure stable housing (another RV or alternative), and cover any unexpected expenses following the fire.

I’ve set the goal higher because we’re not yet sure what the full cost of rebuilding his life will be.

Any amount, no matter how small, would be incredibly helpful.

If you’re unable to donate, please share this page in case it finds someone who can.
