On the early morning of February 14, 2026, a devastating fire broke out in an apartment building near West 123rd Street and South Bishop Street in Calumet Park. The fire started in the basement boiler room and quickly spread throughout the building, destroying multiple units and leaving families displaced.
My mom, Charlene Davis, lived in the unit directly above the boiler room where the fire began. Her apartment suffered the worst damage and was completely destroyed.
When she woke up to the sound of what felt like an explosion, she immediately knew something was wrong. Instead of trying to gather her belongings or save anything for herself, she made the selfless decision to go door-to-door, knocking on her neighbors’ apartments to warn them and make sure everyone got out safely. Because of her quick thinking and bravery, several neighbors were alerted in time to escape.
By the time she made it outside, everything she owned was gone.
Charlene lost everything — her furniture, clothing, important documents, family photos, keepsakes, and the memories she had built over the years. Her home is now unlivable, and she is starting completely from scratch.
Anyone who knows my mom knows how much she gives to her community. She has always been the one to help others — supporting neighbors, volunteering her time, showing up when someone needs encouragement, and putting others before herself. Now she is the one who needs help.
