Helping Hand Mission Needs OUR Help!
A devastating fire tore through The Mission on Rock Quarry Road this morning, destroying half of the building and devouring clothing, food, furnishings, electronics, arts, toys, and everything that The Mission provides to our community to assist families in need with food, clothing, furniture, and shelter.
Help is needed in so many areas - not just financial.
- Replenish the supply of goods for our community: clothing, household items, furniture, kitchen items, bedroom items, electronics, toys, furniture...
- Time, resources and expertise: Step one is safety!
- Addressing the areas of the building that have been destroyed, and also what's salvageable.
- For items that can be saved, they'll need storage until the building is safe and ready to be occupied.
- Meals are needed i the morning for those who come daily for food as well as weekly Spaghetti night for the community.
To help with needs in addition to Funds, please reach out via their CONTACT webpage right now as their phone is down.
This page will be updated with information and how to contact as time progresses.
Helping Hand Mission offers programs and events, all free of charge, to help children, teens, elderly, homeless, handicapped, disabled, low-income, and victims of fire become self-sufficient. To name a few:
- Daily meals: Love Baskets consisting of meat, canned goods and vegetables are delivered to needy families to provide a wholesome meal.
- New Bern House: Transitional Housing Program is to provide a temporary home, tools, resources and opportunities for single mothers and other families, experiencing homelessness, to transition into independent living.
- HHM Mission Band 365 and Dance: Some members started in the band when they were 5, and are now in their 40’s. Others grew up in the band and are now raising their own children in it. They are family. And through the years, the band has brought smiles, joy and hope to countless people.
- Operation Warm Clothing: Warm clothing is available in the winter months for the homeless. Items such as gloves, sweaters, and coats can be picked up free of charge by persons in need.
In 1973, Ms. Sylvia Wiggins founded the Helping Hand Mission with a goal of “joining hands to support families in need.” The mission became a second home to many as it provided children a place to go after school, stay out of trouble and be safe.
"The idea was to join hands to support families in need. A lot of time there are people who need things, but they don’t know how to go get it. A lot of time people are too embarrassed to ask...but I’ll ask for you.
This has been a great ride for me. I had a dream that we could do some of the great things we’ve done. I see everybody progressing, everybody doing well, people coming in with new ideas. It’s a passion to me, a way of life, a calling. When I get up I don’t feel like I’m going to work. I’m going to the mission. I’m at home. “
Sylvia Wiggins.
