My Story: Rebuilding After Hurricane Melissa in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica
My name is Santana McGrath, and I’m from Thornton, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. Our community was hit hard by Hurricane Melissa — a storm that took away more than just our homes and belongings. It destroyed livelihoods, left families displaced, and brought pain and uncertainty to so many of us who now struggle to start over.
When the hurricane passed, what was once a peaceful place was left in ruins. Roofs were torn off, crops and livestock were wiped out, and the essentials we depended on—food, water, and shelter—became scarce overnight. I personally lost most of my possessions in a property I rented.
But even in the midst of devastation, I believe in hope and community. That’s why I’m sharing my story here — to ask for help in rebuilding my life and helping others around me do the same. Every contribution, no matter how small, brings me one step closer to restoring stability, safety, and dignity.
Your donation will go towards rebuilding, replacing essential items, and supporting recovery efforts in my area. I’m determined to rise again, and with your support, I can rebuild not just for myself, but for my community too.
Thank you for reading, sharing, and supporting. Together, we can bring light back to St. Elizabeth after Hurricane Melissa.
❤️ With gratitude,
Santana McGrath.
