Who Is Olive Albertha Campbell
It’s hard to express who Olive Albertha Campbell is and what her community means to her. To me, she’s my mother — a mother of five, grandmother of thirteen, and a beloved community figure in her small Jamaican town.
Olive Campbell was born and raised in Belmont, Westmoreland, Jamaica, by her grandmother, Rebecca Campbell, a midwife and village elder who spent her life helping others. From her, Mom learned that home is more than shelter — it’s a sanctuary.
Known in her community as Sister Ilive, my mother grew up during the era of reggae and Rastafarian culture. She was influenced by her cousin Peter Tosh, whose music brought him off the island and shaped her own calling as a reggae artist.
In her early twenties, Olive left Jamaica for California to create a better life. Though far from home, she made sure Jamaica stayed close — opening her doors to new arrivals, filling her home with food and music, and performing her own reggae songs across the country.
After surviving a stroke following the pandemic, she returned to Jamaica to live her dream: performing, growing food, and creating a space of peace and belonging for others.
What Happened
In October 2025, Hurricane Melissa devastated Jamaica. My mother’s home, her second daughter's home, and our small family shop were completely destroyed. Her hillside farm — the heart of her daily life — was also lost. Roads were cut off, homes flattened, and the community left struggling.
Why We’re Raising Funds
This GoFundMe will help rebuild her home, her farm, and her future. Funds will go toward:
- Immediate Support: replacing essentials and securing temporary shelter. (≈5K)
- Rebuilding: constructing a hurricane-resistant home and safe space. (≈70K)
- Restoring Her Farm: replanting the land to sustain her and her neighbors. (≈5K)
- If we surpass our goal, extra funds will help others in Belmont who also lost homes and crops.
Who Manages the Funds
Funds are managed by Trinity (Wardle) Loyd and Angelica Simmons SisterIlives youngest daughters. Angelica will be supporting from Los Angeles while Trinity is in New York City.
Project oversight is shared by all five daughters, including Alreca Dias, Dannett Simmons, and Aissatou Gayle Francois, who coordinate local contractors, donation distribution, building plans, and updates from Jamaica. Monthly updates with photos and receipts will show progress.
