The Greenland National Kayak Association, with support from QajaqUSA, is facing a tremendous loss. Their beloved clubhouse, a hub for Greenland-style paddling and cultural exchange, was recently destroyed by fire. Along with the building, an irreplaceable collection of paddling gear—kayaks, garments, paddles, and more—was lost. For the Greenlandic community, these items are not just equipment; they are a living link to centuries of tradition, ingenuity, and survival in the far north. QajaqUSA has long been connected to the Greenland National Kayak Association, sharing in the joy and responsibility of preserving this unique heritage. Many of us have learned from Greenland paddlers, built friendships, and deepened our appreciation for the skills and stories passed down through generations. Now, as our friends face the challenge of rebuilding, we feel called to help restore what was lost.
Your support will help replace the clubhouse and contribute to the recreation of essential gear. Every donation, no matter the size, will help bring back a space where knowledge is shared, skills are honed, and the spirit of Greenlandic paddling lives on. Greenlanders and other people of the far north created the boats and gear that are the models for modern recreational paddling. In Greenland, these items are of immense cultural significance and for thousands of years were essential for survival in this difficult terrain. The kayak is a testimony to the resourcefulness of the people who imagined and created them. Here in the US, we are humbled to be a small part of this tradition, and feel an immense sense of gratitude to the native people who have offered these tools to the greater world.
Please join us in supporting the Ilulissat kayak club as they rebuild. Your generosity will help preserve a remarkable tradition and ensure that future generations can experience the beauty and meaning of Greenland-style paddling.
