Greetings Family, Friends, and Gracious Community,
My name is Robert Gordon, and Altadena is my family’s home. My parents have lived in this city for nearly 30 years, and we are devastated to share that our home was among the houses lost in the Eaton fire.
I received a call about the evacuation mandate late Tuesday night. Knowing my father, who just had surgery the day before, was likely planning on going to sleep, I immediately hopped in the car and drove over to check on him. When I arrived, I could see the fire less than a block away from our home. I got my father and the dogs in the car. I am beyond grateful that I was able to evacuate my dad and that my mom was safely out of town, but the grief we feel for all that was lost weighs heavy.
Altadena, a place rich in history and a tight-knit community, has been our home for so many years. It’s where my parents built their lives, raised me, and formed lasting relationships with neighbors. The strength and character of Altadena have shaped who we are, and losing our home here feels like losing a piece of ourselves.
The responsibility of providing for my aging parents falls on me far sooner and more violently than expected. My parents have lost all of their belongings. I was able to save our photo albums when I went to evacuate my father. In normal circumstances, I would not ask for help and commit to handling this on my own, but given the devastation this fire caused and the overwhelming wave of support, I humbly ask for your support. Any contribution you provide would help me replace their basic needs like clothing and toiletries, and restablish themselves with dignity, and, hopefully, rebuild their life.
My parents’ lives and legacy are etched in the walls of that home, from the laughter shared around the dinner table to the quiet moments that only they have memories of.
