Hey All,
My name is Tameika Vassell (also known as Nadia). I am from Montego Bay, Jamaica, and I currently live in New Jersey. I am the niece and cousin of some of the recipients of this fundraiser, and I have known many of the other families affected my entire life, growing up in Orange and Somerton.
Why I’m raising these funds:
Hurricane Melissa caused severe damage across St. James Parish — especially Somerton, Orange, Wakefield, Dumfries, Irwin, and nearby communities. Homes were destroyed, roofs torn off, roads blocked, and many families now lack basic necessities like food, clean water, electricity, and baby supplies.
My own family has been directly affected:
- My aunt’s home of 40+ years was destroyed
- My cousin’s home lost its entire roof
- Many relatives and neighbors are without food, electricity, and safe shelter
How the funds will be spent:
Every dollar will go directly toward essential support for families in these communities. The funds will be used for:
- Food supplies (purchased in New York and shipped to Jamaica by freight)
- Building materials to repair damaged homes (roofing, lumber, zinc sheets, nails, tarps, etc.)
- Daily necessities such as feminine products, baby items (diapers, formula, wipes), clothing, and hygiene supplies
- Local purchases in Jamaica for urgent needs that cannot wait for shipping
I will be personally overseeing the purchasing and shipment of supplies, and I will make sure funds are used exactly as stated.
These communities raised me. They shaped who I am. Your support will directly help families who have lost nearly everything but are still holding each other up with love and resilience.
