Hi I'm Ian. I love fixing stuff (especially bikes) and I really dislike waste. I'm also a volunteer on a Helpline so I understand how important crisis services are to people. I'm always looking for little ways I can plug things together to help out and create benefit for people. It's kerbside pickup in our suburb and I've collected over 50 bikes already within two kms of my house alone. I've renovated a few bikes lately and I've got the crazy idea that I can use my skills to keep these discarded bikes out of landfill, get them roadworthy, ready for fun and freedom, and give them to Lifeline and The Salvation Army to sell in their Op Shops. I'm happy to supply the labour and tools; I just need a little support with some supplies like chains, cables, brake pads, lubricants etc (all the stuff you can't pick up off the street), that I need to make the bikes roadworthy and safe. My baseline estimate is that approx $50 per bike will create a bike that Lifeline or Salvos can sell for at least $100. That effectively doubles the impact of any contributions you make. Everybody wins: the environment, the crisis services, the op-shoppers, and I get covered in grease and smell like WD40. Some bikes need very little investment, others need crucial parts, but they all need something. I will keep you updated on how funds are used as bikes get built. Any money left over when I run out of bikes, will get split between Lifeline and Salvos.
