Rebuilding Hope in Bird Mountain – Hurricane Melissa Relief Fund
Hello everyone,
My name is Joan Gray. For those who don't know me, I'm a proud Jamaican born and raised in the rural community of Bird Mountain, Westmoreland (Jamaica, West Indies). I myself, am a homeowner in Bird mountain and have personally provided aid to many of my community members over the years, this devastation of more than I can handle alone. Though I work abroad, my heart remains with my community—especially now, as they face unimaginable hardship following Category 5 Hurricane Melissa.
I have created this GoFundMe because I understand that Jamaica has never seen this level of destruction before. Furthermore, our government has very limited resources, which we know will prioritize the key infrastructure of the parishes damaged and so families in the rural area, the poorest of the population, unfortunately will likely not receive nor expect significant support from the government simply because the resources are already limited and strained. Hospitals, major roads, sea port and airports are all major priorities to get Jamaica up and functioning again and are expected to be prioritized by the government so we are calling on our fellow members of humanity for aid for families, whatever you can afford would be greatly appreciated.
This devastating storm tore through Bird Mountain, leaving behind widespread destruction. Many of our traditional wooden homes were completely destroyed, and at least 25 to 30 families are now homeless. These families—mothers, fathers, children, and the elderly—have lost everything: their homes, clothing, and food supplies. They are currently displaced, struggling to find shelter and meet their most basic needs.
I'm launching this GoFundMe relief effort to raise $50,000 USD to help these families begin rebuilding their lives.
How the Funds Will Be Used
All donations will go directly toward:
• Building materials and reconstruction for damaged or destroyed homes (wood, roofing, nails, tools, etc.)
• Emergency food and water supplies for displaced families
• Clothing and basic necessities such as bedding and hygiene products
• Temporary shelter support for families awaiting home repairs
• Community rebuilding initiatives to restore shared spaces and ensure a safer, stronger Bird Mountain
Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference in helping these families recover and rebuild.
On behalf of my community, my friends, and my family—thank you for your generosity, your prayers, and your support as we work together to rebuild Bird Mountain and restore hope to those who've lost so much.
Goal: $50,000
Purpose: Rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods, and bringing relief to families displaced by Hurricane Melissa.
By donating here and now you can help one of these devastated families begin to get their lives back on track, and be Absolutely confident that the funds will be used for this purpose. For years before this hurricane my family and I have been key resource of support for the most vulnerable members of our community. In 2016 we built a community center that now shelters all of the displaced people who could not find shelter elsewhere. Please pray for Jamaica. We will recover by the grace of God and with the help of our brethren across the diaspora and globe.
