Lunch with Love
One year ago, my mom, dad, sister (15 yrs.) and I (13 yrs.) started "Lunch with love", our day of giving. Only minutes drive away there are people of all ages starving and cold. Everyday they wake up not knowing if they will have a meal. I imagine the homeless lives are filled with sadness and pain. My mom came up with the idea that we would make 100 lunches for the homeless and then go and hand them out. What started out as a few volunteers and a few donations blossomed into a beautiful outcome. When the word got out about what we were doing, the community banned together and helped grow 100 lunches into 450 lunches. Local businesses donated product, storage space, fresh fruit, bread, hot chocolate, cookies, large containers for us to store hot beverage, money and so much more. So many people donated their time and love. Two days in a row we made sandwiches and packed lunches. Over 50 volunteers (adults and children) showed on both days to help with our mission.
On delivery day we deployed a large group of vehicles and van to serve the lunches downtown Vancouver east side. Many of the volunteers were families with children. We though it was great that parents wanted their children to understand that we should not take anything for granted and help others less fortunate. With the rest of the donations my mom and dad purchased socks and mittens. What I remember most were that the lunches and clothing were received with appreciation and gratitude.
We also remember the weather being so cold. We can't imagine for one day having to live on the street with strangers, being cold, tired, alone, and hungry. That's how the homeless live everyday of their lives. I know it's one lunch but I hope it brightened their day for just a little bit. My sister and I are very thankful for family, a warm home, food and a roof over our heads.
We hope that you will consider donating so that we can go and help even more people this year. Thank you in advance for reading our page and happy holidays to you and your family.
